If you’ve been champing at the bit to do something to help relieve the appalling suffering in Syria but just haven’t been able to figure out what, then your moment has come and it involves food as a force for good. Just like all the best campaigns.
Dozens of chefs and restaurants have answered the call of bigtime Instagrammer Clerkenwell Boy and for the next month they will #CookForSyria. You can play a major part too – either by eating at one of the participating restaurants, hosting your own supper club or cake sale, or by simply buying the #CookForSyria book. Come a crisis, and watch the restaurant industry respond.
Top chefs including Angela Hartnett, Fergus Henderson, José Pizarro, Nuno Mendes and Yotam Ottolenghi cook off the month-long celebration of Syrian cuisine tonight (Monday 31 October) at a £150-a-head sold-out dinner to raise money for Unicef UK’s Children of Syria Fund.
If you didn’t manage to pick up a ticket for the big launch, fear not, you can still play a big part in raising money for this incredibly deserving cause. Dozens of restaurants have already signed up including a list of Food Made Good restaurants way too long to feature here.
The restaurants will donate £2 from each special dishes sold directly to the charity, which works within Syria as well as helping Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey, Egypt and across Europe.
Here is a quick taster of some of the brilliant meals you can sign up for over the next four weeks and make a significant donation.
On the weekend of 26-27 November, The Good Egg in Stoke Newington, North London, will be serving a Syrian Breakfast with a twist – as well as being inspired by the cuisine of Aleppo it will be served in perfect symmetry. Book now for your symmetrical breakfast which could include Lamb babka with poppy seeds and roast Violina pumpkin with a fried egg, Aleppo pepper and burnt lemon yoghurt. Yum.
Two days later 29 November Honest Burgers is laying on a kebab feast fit for meat loving kings at its new Dalston branch. The fast-growing burger group says it wants to bring kebabs out of the post-pub 3am darkness and back into the limelight with brilliant British produce. So they’ve made these beauties from the same great meat that goes into its patties – British dry-aged chuck steak and rib cap from top butcher Turner & George – and then marinated it in a tarragon green sauce and cooked it on a traditional doner spit.
It’s then sliced and served in a toasted khobez flatbread with white garlic, purple pickles, rosemary salted chips, pecorino, onion, parsley and homemade chipotle gravy.
