Bees are essential to food production and they are under threat. They are responsible for up to 75% of the world’s food crops. In the U.K. alone, it would cost over £1.8 billion a year for farmers to hand-pollinate their crops without bees.
You can help promote the plight of bees and the impact on food production AND get promoted to a whole new customer base – without any cost to your business!
Friends of the Earth is aware that there are many chefs and restaurant owners passionate about food education and the environment, sustainability and new ways of eating, and we want to promote you and help encourage people to engage in your movement.
We run a hugely successful campaign – the Great British Bee Count (GBBC), from 19 May to 30 June. Last year, 97% of participants were inspired to take action for bees as a result of taking part in the GBBC – an enormous result. This year, for the first time, we are building on this success with a series of events supporting the GBBC, and we want to run a promotional campaign with restaurants as it specifically relates to food and so highlights the connection with bees and food production, as well as supporting our desire to promote sustainable eating.
To take part in our restaurant campaign supporting the GBBC this year, you would need to have a ‘bee menu’ for the GBBC period 19 May – 30 June and also help us create a method to count how many customers have come through Friends of the Earth promotion.
We are flexible and open to suggestions on what your ‘bee menu’ should look like. The two important things are that it:
- Highlights the link between bees and food production e.g. put a bee symbol next to ingredients that are bee pollinated, or include bee facts on the menu that relate to food.
- Promotes the Friends of the Earth’s GBBC either with logos and symbols on the menu or by including a GBBC ‘text to donate’ ‘business card’ with the bill.
How you achieve these things and what the end result looks like is open to interpretation in order that you can best weave the campaign into your brand, although we would need to approve the basic menu template.
With this venture, we are extremely excited to be taking the unusual step of introducing a commercial element, where we support the restaurants who take part by actively promoting them to our mailing list and through our digital media system. We want to measure the success of this campaign, not only through the increased support of our GBBC, but also as a commercial venture for the participating restaurants, in order to build a business model for this sort of partnership.
