Nando’s urges industry to talk more about sustainability

Nando’s has been a member of the SRA since 2015 and is a founding member of their Groups and Chains working group. It’s great to be part of such an engaging and enthusiastic network, surrounded by individuals and businesses who are as passionate about sustainability as we are.

We have come a long way since we first joined the SRA, both in terms of solid actions on the ground and how we talk about sustainability to our customers. Since 2015 we have reduced the average carbon footprint of a Nando’s meal by 40% and moved all our restaurants in England, Scotland and Wales to 100% renewable electricity. 40% of these restaurants will make the move to renewable gas by October this year before the rest join by the end of 2022. We have also reduced food waste by donating over 2.3 million meals to local charities through our No Chuckin’ Our Chicken program.

We are really proud of these accomplishments, but we know that there’s more to do to become a truly sustainable business. Including talking about what we have been up to and our plans for a more sustainable future.

For such a well-known brand we have been quite shy and retiring when it comes to talking about sustainability. That all changed recently with our announcement this week that we have introduced Science-Based Targets and signed up to the Better Chicken Commitment in May 2020. Part of the reason that we want to be more vocal on sustainability is not just so that we can share our passion with customers, but also to help drive wider industry change. Whilst we can take responsibility for our own direct emissions (which we commit to eliminating to absolute zero by 2030), we will not be able to reduce our supply chain emissions without partnerships and collaborations. We hope that by talking more openly about our sustainability plans we can learn from others and encourage more restaurants to follow suit.
